What Steven Spielberg Can Teach Us: Listen to the Whispers of Your Intuition

Intuition: in a way, it’s like a super power. But unlike radioactive spider bites and magic hammers, this is one that is actually attainable to those willing to work to hone it. It can range from that prickle on the back of your neck that says “danger,” to that warm tingle that tells you you’re about to make the right decision. The ability to make split-second decisions based on your “gut feeling” can help guide you in everyday life, your career, tricky negotiations, and social situations alike.

Intuition is a hard thing for many people to peg down. Because it’s not very widely understood, many people make the mistake of believing that it is something that needs to be acquired, the way one would attend a class to acquire knowledge that they didn’t previously possess. This is a misconception, though that’s not to say that learning doesn’t come into the equation. The truth is that intuition is something that every person naturally possesses. To harness it, you must train your mind to listen to its own intuitive side.

Once you learn to listen to your intuition and use it to further your goals, you open up a whole world of possibilities. Problems that previously seemed not to have solutions are suddenly easily dealt with; options you never knew you had become obvious choices. How you perceive the world changes, and as a result you are empowered to change your life. But why take it from us? Let Steven Spielberg (yes, that Steven Spielberg) explain it himself:

In case you missed it, the whisper that Spielberg is describing is his intuition, which guides his creative process. And considering that he’s the most successful director in history, with two “best director” Oscars to his name and a plethora of spellbinding films in his repertoire, it clearly hasn’t steered him wrong. If you’ve been hesitant about developing your intuition, consider this an example of the kind of success a person can realise if only they listen to the whisper of their heart.

In the following clip, Spielberg describes his intuition in greater detail (it begins at the five-minute mark):

“[For] the first 25 years of our lives, we are trained to listen to voices that are not our own… And at first, the internal voice I needed to listen to was hardly audible, and it was hardly noticeable — kind of like me in high school. But then I started paying more attention, and my intuition kicked in. And I want to be clear that your intuition is different from your conscience. They work in tandem, but here’s the distinction: Your conscience shouts, ‘here’s what you should do,’ while your intuition whispers, ‘here’s what you could do.’ Listen to that voice that tells you what you could do. Nothing will define your character more than that. Because once I turned to my intuition, and I tuned into it, certain projects began to pull me into them, and others, I turned away from.”

What he describes here—the way that your intuition tells you what you could do—is essential to harnessing the gift that you already have. All you need to do is learn how to listen to that voice, and you’ll find that, just like Spielberg, you’ll be drawn down more lucrative paths, while being able to recognize that other paths will be fruitless for you.

Recently, I was faced with a challenge. Every month I strive to bring you a great new technique to enhance your daily lives, but this month I was stuck. Being September, my mind went to back-to-school topics such as organizational techniques and time management. But the truth is, I’ve done those before. What could I offer that would truly be helpful? That would have substance?

While I tried to puzzle this out, I was facing another challenge entirely. I have a lot of projects on the go—including my new book, Lead Intuitively, as well as plenty of travelling abroad—and I was slowly starting to lose my mind—or rather, my memory. Things were slipping my mind and I had to refocus myself on remembering important details. And then came a “eureka!” moment: that both of these challenges had the same solution.

Superior Autobiographical Memory

Your memory is a powerful thing, not to be taken for granted. It is a fundamental tool vital in your daily life, whether personal or professional. And one of the latest marvels of the brain to be discovered is that some people can harness their memories in vivid detail, even years later. This skill is called Superior Autobiographical Memory. Below is a video interview with a woman who possesses this astounding ability; here are a few things to keep in mind as you watch.

Anatomy of Excellence

I thought that this month, I would begin to reveal to you some of my Jedi mind tricks—starting with how to slow down time. One question I’m often asked is, “How are you able to read people so quickly?” Well, it’s easier than it looks. I’ll teach you how to dissect, analyze, evaluate, and read people on a deep level without the use of intuitive abilities.

Take a Deep Breath and Relax Your Mind

Many years ago, a friend of mine—an experienced military sniper—taught me that the first step to slowing down time is to control your breathing. Don’t worry! This technique has nothing to do with shooting a gun. Being a sniper means so much more than that—it’s about being able to read a situation, understand body language, and make split second judgements based on your observations. These skills are just as vital in business and in life, and the key to mastering them is controlling your perception of how time passes. By controlling your breathing, calming your mind, and focusing on behavioural patterns and non-verbal cues, you can read between the lines in an instant.

Before watching the below video, take as much time as you need to relax your mind. See what you can read from the interview about how these remarkable people are able to perfectly recall events that happened decades before. I’ve included a few of my own notes below for you to compare against your own findings.

My notes:

  • Syntax (1:10) “I can feel it,” i.e. she is manifesting memories that feel as real as when they happened.
  • Eye movement (1:12) After saying “I can feel it,” her eye goes down to the right—a gesture associated with recalling memories.
  • Mannerism and eye movement (1:44) Look at her pupils and see how stares into thin air, coming into focus on the specific date that she’s been provided as though she can see it in front of her.
  • Sequence (1:45- 2:00) Look at her hand gestures as she describes the sequence she uses to organize the dates and events in her mind.
  • “I just see it, it’s just there” (4:29) Although the doctor being interviewed calls this an unsatisfactory response, it’s very telling if you read between the lines. It is as though they can simply travel back to a previous point in time and observe it—similar to the Future Self technique which I teach.
  • Eye movement (5:10) Eyes to the right, toggling between looking upwards and looking directly right, indicating visual and auditory memories being recalled.

The Art Of Selling Yourself

The first thing you need to know about selling yourself is that you must recognize that you are not an object and that, no matter in which profession you work, you need to separate your identity from your behaviour or in this case what you call your service or product. You are a human being and as thus you cannot be sold, nor put yourself for sale. I often meet people and ask them what work they do for a living and then they start their ‘elevator pitch’ and I start telling them I simply wanted to know what you do before knowing who you are. What’s the difference you may ask? One huge difference is that The Donald, which relates his brand to him, is not a product. What he sells is the illusion of success! Buy my ties and you will project success or you will feel successful. Associate yourself to me and you will be successful. The reason this is crucial is that one of the main problems people have about “selling themselves” is the fear of rejection.

Things I have learned from The Don (AKA The Godfather)

Ok! I didn’t really learn it from him but I am sure that you’ve either heard the saying or seen the classic epic movie. I actually learned it quite young in modelling school when my teacher Cindy told me: “Just remember that if they don’t take you it has nothing to do with you. They are looking for someone that fits what they need and you either happen to have the look they are looking for or you don’t. Its not personal”. I realized early on that my self and the product are two different things. I may project my brand as my looks but whether I was or wasn’t chosen for a shoot, it was simply fun and games and I never felt, even to this day, rejected.

Why do you avoid rejection?

Probably the same reason you would avoid a bullet in the leg. It hurts. If it does not hurt then you’ve probably found a way, like I have, to cope with it and to move on. Or you simply have so much pain that you no longer care. Then, unfortunately, you might end up like the “Wolf of Wall Street”, Jordan Belford, and start hurting others like he used to.

Why does it hurt when someone says no?

It hurts because you may start to perceive yourself as flawed, not good enough, ashamed, guilty, and in some cases you may begin to think that you don’t deserve it or are unworthy. Notice I said that you may start to perceive, and not they made you feel – as if you are flawed, etc. Only you can tell yourself those things, and only you can allow yourself to be reminded of those feelings (I will talk about that later in my posts).

Top 7 Ways To ‘Sell Yourself’ #1. You must change your mindset and other people’s mindset about the words: selling and buying

I spent the first couple of paragraphs selling you on the idea that ‘selling yourself’ is easy, as well as reframing the way you thought about the subject – probably without you being fully conscious about it. This is because I used simple vocabulary, which avoids conflicting deep-rooted conviction, in a tone, which was pleasant and educational. I started gaining rapport with you by giving you some of my experience and a picture of a movie with a quote you surely heard, and probably associated to before at one time in your life. In fact, by this point in the newsletter I may also sound like Clarice from Silence of the Lamb interviewing Hannibal Lecter. Recently, during one of my last training sessions, I took about ten minutes to explain this principle to a student who later messaged me on Facebook saying:

Your insight with regards to how I’m selling ‘feelings’ in Arbonne has completely changed my perspective. After our workshop, in two days I made $800 in product sales. Thank you for your coaching and support!

#2. Recognize what you’re selling and whom you’re selling it to

Seriously, would you sell sex to a priest? If you would, then this article is probably not for you. One of the major mistakes people make is they think everyone will buy the Kool-Aid (meaning whatever you are selling) just because you are. If that’s what you’re doing then that’s probably why you are often rejected. Research your client, mate, subject etc., enough so that you are able to understand their need. Then, explain to them what you are offering in a way in which they’ll see the value it and you can bring them. That’s why gaining rapport is so important!

#3. Use the power of your voice to make others feel that they can trust you

Have you ever picked up the phone, and the person at the other end had a voice where in your head you thought “its an immigrant”, and already you start shutting off because you automatically assume its going to be a bad call for no other reason than your brain started making a judgement call simply from the tone of voice? Well, some major companies began training centers to teach people how to speak better English. Here’s a great new study regarding the power of voice, which you can also actually test yourself with in order to see how you would best vote when you hear someone. Use the power of your voice to project a sense of confidence and trustworthiness so that people will want to “buy” whatever it is you are selling.

#4. Gain Rapport

No matter what you do or what you ‘Sell’, if you don’t get this right from the start then you’re not going to second base – meaning the person, organization, or group will not allow you to go any further.

You need to gain rapport in order to establish a relationship and trust so that the one’s ‘buying’ feel confident, secure, and are able to build a trust strong enough to let you.

#5. Recognize what the person is ‘buying’, then match it

If it’s a relationship, it may be one or many of your qualities, values, looks, the way they feel around you, your voice or your strengths. In business, it maybe your expertise, your strengths, your contacts, your network, your experience, the resources you have acquired over time or etc. Find out what they want and then voice it out. Show them or simply let them know. View it as you are informing them in a way in which it helps them make a decision about a need or a preference they are seeking.

#6. Nurture your self-image. Not your negative ego

They say first impressions are very important and research backs this. When I hear people talk to me about attracting the one they love or getting the job they want and say ‘they should love me just the way I am’ I usually start laughing out loud. Now I did say nurture your image and not your ego – because that position is exactly coming from ego. The reason it does so is that it comes from a position of entitlement or of low self-expectation and self-worth. You don’t have to be a model to take care of yourself and you don’t have to dress fancy to try to impress everyone. It’s about self-respect and respecting others. ‘The Grouch’ from Sesame Street is a funny character that lives in a garbage can and that’s always grouchy but I seriously doubt he could get a full time job or a date for that matter outside of Sesame Street. Looks are important and the brain judges, as well as makes choices, and decisions no matter what you would like to believe. Style has changed over the years, but in many cultures image is everything. Facebook Video Live for Autism Awareness (WAAD2016) – Waiving Canada Flag In A Snow Storm

I just had to blog about this. Imagine a 6-year year old child who is just so passionate about the Canadian flag that everyday sun, rain or snow storm (in this case), he just wants to wave it outside and sing the national anthem. 


Since Its WAAD2016 (Autism Awareness Month) I figured I would make a video of it and test out Facebook’s Live Video which just rolled out a new update just a couple of hours ago. I wasn’t to impressed with Periscope, which is the Live Video app from Twitter, so I figured I would give Facebook Live Video a shot.

First off it was so easy to just let my son Storm-Alexander (yes Storm as in snow storm) go outside and wave his flag and decide within 2 minutes on using the app without any training what’s so ever.

As someone who shoots videos in 4k and usually has a crew and all the professional gear to work with, I thought this was east as cake. Mike Zuckerberg is upping his game with this updated application on Facebook feed.

WAAD2016 for those of you who don’t know anything about it, is simply bringing awareness to Autism which is also known as ASD which stands for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Spectrum because there are many different variations to it. I wont go into great details in this post as it was just to bring awareness to it and share my son’s love and passion about the peace tower and Canada’s Flag and National Anthem.
